All we learned about Tiger during those 45 minutes is that he somehow played with a torn Achilles tendon after recovering from his knee injury and it took five stitches to close his lip after the wreck back in November.
So he lied about that, too.
My point being?
We all will take from that press conference what we want.
Whether it's the Ambien or Vicodin he took to help with the pain in his knee and the pain from dealing with the loss to his father a few years ago.
Whether it's the "that's personal, thank you" answer on what form of rehab he was in during January and February.
Whether the whole idea of one Dr. Anthony Galea ,who was arrested with performance-enhancing drugs, can show up and help Tiger four times without dealing those same performance-enhancing drugs.
You get the picture.
Tiger stepped up and pretty much answered the questions (no limit was put on them).
What I personally took from those 45 minutes was this:
1. Tiger is a lot bigger and buff in person than you would ever think.
2. Those writers who cover the PGA on a weekly basis have never seen him more humble.
3. When he says he is going to acknowledge fans more during his rounds, I believe him.
4. There were some of the most talented magazine, newspaper and TV writers and broadcasters in that room. I'd say 99.9 percent came away thinking we learned nothing new about this Tiger ordeal, but we will see a more open Tiger.
For me?
I sat in the front row and was even called on to ask a question during this historic press conference. I asked Tiger about his peers accepting and he said he was "surprised by all the hugs."
That's what I will selfishly remember.
And, just how much bigger Tiger is in person.
Lancer, I loved your question about Tiger's nerves and what the reaction from his peers has and will be this week. It made Tiger pause, take stock and think about it. Way to go! Although you were not on camera during your question during "The Inerview" I can recognize your voice in a crowd of 1000's of sports reporters.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, "The Interview" was streamed live on espn.com and ESPN TV - you were part of it all Lance. Cool!
ReplyDeleteWow Lance what a day. Looking forward to a fun week.
